Public board to investigate complaint about book

Toronto’s public school board will look into a complaint about the novel To Kill A Mockingbird if the upset parent files a formal grievance, says Chair John Campbell.

The mother raised concerns about the classic to the principal at Malvern Collegiate, who allowed the teen to read another book.

It is not known if the mother has — or will — pursue a formal complaint, although a note to trustees from Chris Spence, director of education for the Toronto District School Board, said “principal and curriculum leader have been keeping this discussion at the school level, but parent has indicated she may go to the wider media.”

“This is one of the most widely read books in secondary schools in North America in terms of curriculum and also the most widely challenged,” said Campbell.

“The book certainly has a historical perspective that is undeniable, and it’s important in the understanding of the whole issue of race relations.”

He said the board will strike a book review committee if the parent pushes her concerns. “You basically have to fill out an application to have a review,” Campbell added.

He said the committee does involve a fair bit of work, but the board can’t simply dismiss a claim. “We are a public body that is open to public scrutiny,” he said.

Meanwhile, Trustee Josh Matlow plans to “contest the board’s practice allowing parents to have their children opt out of reading celebrated books,” such as To Kill a Mockingbird.
